Head of Year - teaching role

TimePlan Education are working in partnership with a fantastic secondary school in Lewisham to recruit a Head of Year for a temp-to-perm position. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced teacher with middle management experience to take on a rewarding pastoral role and make a real impact on students' lives.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the welfare, behaviour, and academic progress of a specific year group. You will be joining a school that is part of a trust with a supportive Senior Leadership Team (SLT) committed to providing excellent opportunities for professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a designated year group, with a focus on student welfare, behaviour, and academic achievement.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance personal and social development for all students in the year group.
  • Monitor attendance, punctuality, and behaviour, implementing initiatives to improve these areas.
  • Collaborate closely with the SLT and other Heads of Year to ensure consistent pastoral care across the school.
  • Work in partnership with parents, guardians, and external agencies to support student well-being and progress.
  • Maintain a teaching timetable within your subject specialism while balancing Head of Year responsibilities.
  • Organise and lead year group assemblies, events, and extracurricular activities.
  • Support the transition process for students between key stages and provide guidance on options and career pathways.
  • Contribute to whole-school initiatives, particularly around behaviour management and safeguarding.

Person Specification:

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with experience in secondary education.

  • Previous middle management experience in a school setting.
  • A passion for pastoral care and supporting student well-being.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage a dual teaching and pastoral role effectively.
  • A proactive and solution-focused approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students, encouraging them to reach their full potential.
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding practices and a commitment to promoting a safe, inclusive environment.
