Title: Freelance Senior Interaction Designer Start Date: Monday 6th January Contract Length: 6 months (with a strong likelihood of extension) Client: Local London Borough Council Day Rate: £500 per day (max) IR35 Status: Inside IR35 (Umbrella company required for invoicing) Working Arrangement: Hybrid - primarily remote, with occasional visits to their Central London office Role Overview: As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will play a key role in shaping how residents and staff interact with local council services. Your primary focus will be on creating intuitive, inclusive, and accessible digital interfaces that simplify and enhance service delivery. You'll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including service designers, user researchers, and content designers, to ensure user needs remain at the heart of service design and delivery. Key Responsibilities: Accessibility Compliance: Ensure designs adhere to WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Workshops: Plan and facilitate co-design workshops to gather insights and align stakeholders. Evidence-based Design: Use user research, analytics, and usability testing to inform and refine your designs. Coaching & Leadership: Guide less experienced designers and support teams in adopting user-centred approaches. Prototyping: Use tools like Figma, Sketch, and Miro, and basic front-end skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for prototypes. Interaction Design: Develop user-friendly interfaces that meet accessibility standards and resonate with diverse users. Preferred Experience: Agile Practices: Experience delivering in an Agile environment, managing sprints, and iterating based on user feedback. Technical Acumen: An understanding of the constraints and opportunities provided by web technologies and platforms. Local Government: At least 18 months of experience working on council services or platforms, either public-facing or internal. Research & Analysis: Experience assisting with usability testing, heuristic evaluations, or using analytics to derive actionable insights. Accessibility Standards: Proven ability to design with inclusivity in mind, ensuring compliance with public sector accessibility requirements. Role Highlights: Onboarding: 4-8 weeks, fully supported. Day Rate: £450-£600 per day (depending on experience). Work Setup: Primarily remote, with occasional on-site meetings in London.
