Working Pattern: Permanent Full Time Flexible First options available SSEN Distribution's subsea cable team is a key part of its operations in the north of Scotland responsible for monitoring the submarine cable network that provides power supplies from the mainland to 60 Scottish Islands, including the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Arran and the Orkney Islands Reporting to the Lead Submarine Cable Design Engineer and relevant Project Managers, you will support the delivery of engineering elements of the projects from the preliminary route identification through to the development of the detailed design and cable installation and commissioning. With a priority on safety and the environment, you will have technical and design responsibilities within: Submarine Cable procurement and Submarine Cable route design, including desktop feasibility study, cable burial risk assessment, on bottom stability analysis and UXO risk assessment. Preparing pre-construction information and scopes for all aspects of the works in line with SSEN's specification and industry best standard. Managing technical aspects of contractors, from delivering survey data, to report generation, through to cable installation. Technical support to the wider subsea team, procurement and commercial, environmental and consents. Internal design governance processes, including design management and design risk. What do I need? To be considered for this role, we would love you to have: Experience of submarine power cable landfall assessments, route engineering, design analysis and specifying methods of cable installation, burial and protection, based on marine survey data and experience of route engineering design with GIS and drawing packages. Knowledge of submarine power cable installation, both in deep and shallow waters, and aspects that may affect the cable integrity during installation and operation.? Experience of preparing and managing tender packages for submarine power cable works, including installation and marine surveys. Experience in considering stakeholder views within the design development and experience of onshore cable route assessment for subsequent connection of the submarine cable to the distribution network is desirable Applicable Engineering degree qualified or equivalent experience. A full driving licence is required for this role.? Working Pattern: Permanent Full Time Flexible First options available Reporting to the Asset Policy Standards and Specifications Manager, this is a key role where you will act as the Technical Authority and subject-matter expert in SSEN for Transformers, Reactors, CT's and VT's from LV to 132kV. This role develops and maintains SSE's Specifications relating to these assets as well as being the point of reference for the policy and procedures relating to the installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of SSE's distribution equipment ensuring compliance, safety, quality and efficiency. Your duties and responsibilities will include: First and foremost, to actively promote safe working practice in the team and wider SSEN, ensuring compliance of our equipment with international standards and relevant safety and environmental legislation. Acting as a competent Technical Authority in the Distribution Networks business you will be responsible for SSE's Specifications relating to Transformers, Reactors, CT's and VT's as well as being the point of reference for the policy and procedures relating to the installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of SSE's distribution equipment. You will own and continuously develop SSEN Specifications and Standards and act as the technical Authority in the Procurement Assessment process providing optimal solutions to the business, and ensure the approved documentation is delivered 'on time' and to the necessary quality to comply with the procurement processes. Lead smooth roll-out of equipment changes and manage new equipment introduction to minimise the impact to business. Liaise with training schools and project teams to trial new equipment and provide constant support when needed. You'll liaise with manufacturers to explore new developments, and be required to witness FAT's and conduct Factory assessment visit on behalf of SSE. You will also act as point of reference between manufacturers and SSE upon equipment defects or non conformance and develop solutions for the company. What do I need? To succeed in this role you will be a qualified Electrical Engineer with a strong working knowledge of the specifications and operation of transformers, reactors, VT's and CT's used on the Distribution and Transmission Networks including good knowledge of statutory, regulatory & license requirements, safety and environmental legislation. In addition, we would love you to have: Good knowledge of Asset Management and how asset intensive organisations function; either from other roles within SSE, other energy network roles or from experience gained working for other utilities, engineering consultancies, DNO equipment suppliers or delivery contractors. Change management experience relating to implementing new policies / standards and new equipment. Knowledge of asset management practices, asset systems, operation and safety of high voltage electricity networks. As this is a field based role and a full UK driving licence is an essential requirement. The engineering, environmental and economic challenges that we all face mean that society needs innovative solutions, like renewable energy, electric vehicles, heat networks, community energy and energy storage plus the systems to make these solutions deliverable. This change is altering the role of electrical networks, and at SSEN Distribution, the Whole System Development team are instrumental in building the strategic plans for our networks; looking at a 5-year to 2050 horizon. The Whole System team drive the strategic network investment that will facilitate net-zero targets. Through stakeholder engagement we provide information to help inform stakeholder decision-making and use stakeholder data to help shape our future network investments decisions. The Whole System Development team make critical decisions that will positively impact the way our network operates in the future by building evidence, through stakeholder engagement, to fully justify the need to undertake strategic investment. In this role your key responsibilities will be: Stakeholder Engagement: Drive targeted engagement with Local Authorities to support their Local Area Energy Plans. Engaging and influencing internal and external stakeholders across all levels; promoting whole system as a real source of benefits that can improve distribution networks and wider industry. Strategic Investment: Using stakeholder information and the DFES to understand the impact on the SSEN network, identify areas where asset capacity is forecast to be exceeded. Understand the potential impact of overloading assets, gather evidence to support the findings, review potential solutions and unlock RIIO-ED2 uncertainty mechanism expenditure to mitigate the overload and prepare engineering justification paper for RIIO-ED3 investment. Decision making transparency: Develop and own the Distribution Network Options Assessment (DNOA) methodology which ensures we are acting as a neutral market facilitator and providing transparent decisions on when to use flexibility. Work with System Planning and Flexibility teams to deliver associated DNOA Output Reports and provide associated communications to stakeholders. Licence Conditions: Develop, support and publish publicly available data for the Whole System Coordination Register and the Network Development Plans (NDP). Using stakeholder engagement records and specific projects undertaken by SSEN, capture and present all works where SSEN are driving Whole System activities. As part of the NDP, review overloaded assets identified by the modelling team, propose solutions to mitigate the overload and provide a written update to the NDP. What do I need? As a Strategic Development Engineer, you must have a good understanding of how distribution networks work, how third parties interact and impact our network, and can take technical information and clearly communicate it to stakeholders that may have limited or no knowledge of our industry. Key skills that we are looking for: Minimum HNC or STEM Degree or equivalent with relevant industry experience. Working knowledge of UK electricity networks and a good understanding of interactions with other utilities.
