AWE's Nuclear Threat Reduction team currently have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and validation on a broad range of engineering projects. Location: Aldermaston, West Berkshire. We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with onsite parking. On-site role. Package: £44,990 - £58,050 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience) Closing Date: 27th May 2024 Applicants must be able to apply engineering methods, tools and processes to complex engineering tasks; provide guidance and mentoring to inexperienced engineers; deliver engineering solutions that will maximise productivity, reliability, innovation and quality to the business. Ideally you will have demonstrable experience of working on multi-disciplined projects and be familiar with most of the following areas: Stakeholder engagement skills, and clear understanding of technical requirements Mechanical design and substantiation of hardware Development of assembly methods and safe systems of work Awareness of systems engineering principles, techniques and management processes Oversight of hardware manufacture/ assembly Role model behaviours with regards to safety and security. Product Lifecycle Management including configuration management and quality control. 3D modelling and draughting (ideally in Siemens NX) Working in a dynamic, fast paced work environment To support technical delivery successful candidates will also be able to quickly grasp and articulate challenges and solutions. Proficiency in the following is therefore necessary: Technical and management skills including problem solving and decision making Oral, written and presentation skills Interpersonal and communication skills to ensure effective communication across levels and disciplines (both internally and externally) Ability to provide independent peer review. Developing an understanding of the financial and programmatic implications of decisions taken. Desirable Engineering/Quality analysis techniques (including FMEA) Understanding of Finite element analysis (FEA) Understanding of Geometrical Tolerancing (GD&T) Member of a professional institution or working towards. To design, prepare & complete design & documentation packages including drawings in 3D CAD & PDM for Power Transformers. To deliver support to the Transformer Engineering Department, to meet forecasted delivery of Transformers and Engineering Department Objectives. To develop effective working relationship with customers by representing the engineering team and the company. Main Responsibilities Produce Mechanical Designs of Transformers and Reactors for up to 132kV Transformers as per Scope of Work. Prepare manufacturing and customer drawings under the direction of Senior Engineer/Engineering Manager to Scope of work. Produce Transformer assembly, General assembly drawings. Produce Bills of materials and upload on PDM system. Produce Tender General Arrangement and Tender documents. Check and approve supplier offers and drawings. Ensure that all designs and applied technology is compliant with the relevant technical, safety and environmental standards and codes of practice. Working with the customer and the wider Engineering team to achieve the required specifications. Develop best practice for Transformers designs and processes Update and maintain the design software such as Inventor and engineering drawings. Assist with continuous improvement of Transformer design and optimisation. Maintain understanding of engineering processes, Quality systems and awareness of HSE requirements. Produce Technical details for Mechanical Design for preparation of O&M Manuals. Produce Technical Datasheets, Compliance documents for the Tendering department. Produce shipping list for Transformers and Reactors. Support IT department to keep existing & future CAD systems up to date. Support Projects: Check and review scopes of work are technically correct before being released on the system. Support Quality on supplier developments and inspections. Support the Purchasing department and assign Planner codes to parts and create list of parts to order items based on material type with a controlled document. Undertake CPD to maintain professional competence. Person Specification Qualifications An accredited Bachelors or honours degree in engineering or technology A Higher National Diploma or a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus appropriate further learning to degree level. An Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or other work-based learning programme approved by a licensed professional engineering institution. Qualification, approved by a licensed professional engineering institution at level 3 (or above) in the Qualifications and Credit Framework/National Qualifications Framework Skills Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk vault. Experience in a PDM system is preferable. Good IT Skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) Able to work to high standards of quality, precision and consistency. A flexible and adaptable attitude to the completion of work with the ability to work proactively and independently. Excellent organisation and planning skills, attention to details and the ability to work to tight deadlines. Strong teamworking & stakeholder management skills. Knowledge Mechanical Design of Power Transformers and Reactors up to 132kV and 120MVA Experience Relevant & meaningful Mechanical design experience in OEM or similar environment.
