Systems Engineers (Warhead Containers) AWE have exciting new opportunities for Systems Engineers with experience in requirements definition, functional and physical architectural design, model-based systems engineering and verification and validation. As a member of the WH containers team, successful candidates will be required to support projects developing, procuring, and testing new designs in support both current and future programmes. These projects vary from component level to full system design. Candidates will be motivated, delivery focused engineers, capable of working within a team and engaging with various stakeholders from different disciplines, internal and external to the nuclear weapons enterprise. An appreciation of the company procedures and processes would be beneficial but not essential. Location: Reading Salary: £37,860 - £53,000 (dependent on experience) Closing Date: 24th June 2024 The Role? Candidates will be team players who are proactive in nature and happy to work across a variety of projects. Systems Engineers within the Warhead Containers team work on design projects developing defining requirements, apportioning operational, safety and security functionalities across the system and identify the verification methods required. Engineers will be required to travel as part of the role in support of trials, customer interface, external meetings with suppliers and domestic and international R&D projects. The team works on multiple projects from the concept phase, into service and through to disposal and are responsible for: Requirements generation Mechanical Design using CAD software (preferably Seimens NX) Producing Engineering Drawings Supporting the development of Concept of Operations Carrying out Verification and Validation activities (including both onsite and offsite trials management) Stakeholder Engagement with other (international and domestic) government agencies and regulators The development and delivery of viable technical solutions that meet customer requirements Leading / Supporting project reviews for internal programmes and external contracts, including providing written reports and verbal briefs to management and stakeholders. Key aspects of the role will be to provide an in-house warhead safety assessment capability in support of delivering the company's strategic objectives. The role will entail effective delivery of warhead safety assessments and providing advice on warhead safety, systems, electrical or mechanical design, explosives, nuclear and process engineering. Key accountabilities and responsibilities Deliver warhead safety assessments on time and in full, aligned with company management procedures. Conduct safety analysis against requirements and standards across the full engineering lifecycle. Ability to apply appropriate safety methods, tools and techniques to a product. Ability to consider higher level system and detailed component or material issues. Liaise with a range of stakeholders as part of a wider system design and verification team, balancing conflicting priorities and perspectives. Support external activities as required as part of the Outreach and Engineering Programme, i.e. through presentations to external conferences/symposia. Skills and experience Honours Degree (or equivalent) in science, engineering or related discipline or equivalent level of experience. An interest in high consequence safety assessments or looking to develop within a nuclear safety focussed role. Able to demonstrate good engineering and scientific judgement.
