A rare and exciting opportunity has become available to work within an established team on a beautiful private garden surrounding a grade II listed Georgian mansion near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. The role offers secure, interesting, enjoyable and varied work in a supportive working environment. The position is full time and permanent. The traditional estate is made up of 350 acres mainly parkland with fine specimen trees, Arboretum, Pinetum and a Victorian Fernery. The main gardens surrounding the property consist of about 25 acres including a 5-acre pleasure garden containing herbaceous borders, mixed borders, and a fine collection of Rhododendrons, mixed shrubs, wildflower areas and woodland garden. The two-acre walled garden was restored to its former glory and is currently used for production supplying the residents, team and estate with fruits, vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants. The six glasshouses including restored Foster & Pearson and Messenger Glasshouses are used for propagation, two vineries, temperate house, and peach house. There are also areas of rough grass, fine turf and extensive beech, yew, and box formal and informal hedges. The current team of 4 are qualified gardeners and report into a longstanding and knowledgeable Head Gardener. Most of the large projects have been completed but the gardens are always evolving and are kept to a high horticultural standard with the aim of being as organic as possible. The vacancy would suit someone with drive, energy, and the passion for gardening to continue to enhance the garden and work in harmony with the team. The ideal candidate will be physically fit, hands on and able to work alone or as part of a team to maintain the garden to an exceptional standard. Experience using a range of machinery would be ideal as the team use onsite compact tractors, hedge cutters, strimmer, edger, ride on and pedestrian mower. Spray certificates PA1 / PA6 and Chainsaw certificate CS30 / CS31 are advantageous but not essential as training can be provided if required. Applicants will have excellent plant knowledge and either hold a horticultural qualification and / or experience working on a diverse private estate in a similar capacity.
