Independent Forgings and Alloys (IFA), one of the UK's leading independent aerospace and industrial forgers, are currently seeking a Metallurgist to our Technical team. Joining our team, you will... Manage, monitor, and proactively advise on hot material conversion. Design and prepare production routes. Prepare methods of manufacture. Check pre-print and final drafts of works route cards. Liaise with customers. Investigate non-conformances. Develop technical expertise to enable optimisation of product and process capabilities and cost reduction activities. What are we looking for? Joining us as an experienced Metallurgist, you will have a strong understanding of quality and inspections procedures and processes. Educated to degree level in Metallurgy, Materials Technology or similar, you will be a team player with great organisational, communication and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of metal procedures and thermomechanical processes would be beneficial, and we would particularly like to hear from those who have experience of working with titanium, nickel and iron-based alloys. Role: To provide support in the day to day inspection/ operational activities. Developing the laboratory and material acceptance processes within the laboratory. Provide technical assistance to both the procurement and heat treatment teams to ensure material/certification issues are quickly resolved. Liaise with other internal departments such as quality, engineering and production to help priorities. You will be responsible for: Investigating and continuously improving methods for material certification Verification of raw material & bought out complete certification Assisting the inspection / procurement teams where required with material certification Issues Developing furnace programs extracting and retaining furnace charts Managing engineering changes and up-issues of component drawings Developing the laboratory departments equipment and facilities Maintaining and updating internal departmental processes and procedures Producing & processing quotes for external customers for heat treatment Carrying out hardness inspection methods - Vickers/Rockwell/Brinell Performing and controlling site NDT processes i.e. MPI/Dye Pen /Ultrasonic & X-ray interpretation Role Requirements: Experience within a materials / metallurgical / heat treatment discipline Interpretation of material certification in line with national and international standards and procedures. ( BS, BS EN, ISO, ASTM & DEF STAN ). NDT experience to PCN / SNT. HNC/HND or equivalent in material or metallurgical studies Interpretation of material micro-structures from prepared heat-treatment samples (Microscopy). Problem solving relating shop floor issues caused by internal heat-treatment / metallurgical causes (distortion control / hardness problems / machinability / micro- structural). Knowledge of material selection & properties in relation to gear manufacture (Carbon-grade steels). Be able to maintain and update company / departmental processes and procedures. Be capable of liaising with internal departments / external customers and suppliers. Be used to working to company quality / health and safety procedures.
