Graduate Transport Planner

Posted by SME Graduate Employment Ltd.

Picture a housing scheme, or retail park, and think of the ways that people get in and out of it. For example, there are bus, pedestrian, and cycle lanes (very important for sustainability). The job is related to the planning application process for these.

You'll be working on a range of projects and preparing transport assessments for new developments.

There is plenty of work with data; interpreting it and producing reports to clarify impacts, and likely transport patterns.

You'll be modelling transport networks, and outlining designs of sustainable transport improvements.
You will be in regular contact with outside partners, including planning consultants, architects, surveyors, clients, and developers.

The ability to get on with clients is essential. Everyone needs to support the client base to ensure repeat business.
There will also be the occasional site visit (which may mean an early start!).

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT...

Some of the above may not mean anything to you, but don't worry: full training is provided.
You will be supporting existing staff from the top down: learning alongside existing graduates, and all positions up to company directors.

You'll always be learning and adapting, as the policy base changes both at local and national level. Design codes become updated and demographics change, always meaning that adjustment and trends are important.
There is possible support to study for a Masters, for the right person (if you are interested).

In terms of future prospects, there is no upward limit as to the level you can reach; as the company grows, so will you.

The business also has Flood Risk and Sustainable Drainage teams, and a detailed civil engineering design team. The work is all inter related, and you will also have opportunities to work with the other teams and learn a bit more about them.

WHAT YOU'LL GET...

A starting salary of between £25,000 and 28,000. There's a good team spirit, with pub Thursdays, and games nights. Also outings, both social and professional.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Geography would be the preferred degree. Or anything specifically related to Transport Planning.
You'll need to have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Good Excel skills are also needed, as you'll be managing and interpreting data.

WHERE YOU'LL BE DOING IT...

A beautiful new office in a larger office complex with many on-site facilities. It's a friendly team, with nice people; there are less than 20 in the team, and this includes several other graduates.

In a small village in Hertfordshire, near the border of Essex; the offices are easy to reach by train, bus or car (there is onsite parking). Commutable from areas including Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Hertford, Welwyn, Harlow, Bishops Stortford, Barnet, Enfield, and Stevenage.

There are rail transport links to Hertford East (10 minutes), Tottenham Hale (30 minutes) and Liverpool Street London (50 minutes).
