This opportunity comes at an exciting point in Birkbeck's history, as we recently celebrated our 200th anniversary. Founded in 1823 to give working Londoners and learners from non- traditional backgrounds the chance of a university education, our mission remains unchanged as we enter the third century.

Birkbeck has always occupied a unique niche in the UK Higher Education landscape, and weremain different to other institutions to this day: We are a world-class research and teaching institution with a tradition of providing higher education to people in work.

Whilst the majority ofour classes are in the evening, we are introducing learning opportunities that provide students with more choice about how, when and where they study, including daytime teaching for some programmes and HyFlex technology that allows students to participate fully in teaching sessions online simultaneously with those in classrooms.

Reporting to the Director of Estates, the role of the Sustainability and Energy Managerhas been created to lead policy development and strategic planning for sustainability initiativesin conjunction with promoting sustainable working practices and cultural change within the University. A main deliverable will include developing and implementing the University'sEnergy and Carbon Management Plan (ECMP).

This is a newly created, exciting role, that underscores Birkbeck's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. As a leading educational institution dedicated to fostering innovative research and education, Birkbeck recognises the need to address global energy challenges, and work to implement sustainable practices across all facets of operations as part of a phased approach.

The successful candidate willpossess an excellent working knowledge of sustainability issues and climate change. You will have demonstrable expertise in carbon accounting and emissions reporting and have strong knowledge using an environment management system. Youwill also possessstrong communication skills with the ability to succeed in a highly collaborative and collegiate environmentthat rely on extensive stakeholder engagement.? The role will suit professionals with a proven track record in a similar role with success in managing high-level and complex projects across multiple workstreams and priorities, ideally in a stakeholder facing sustainability context.
