Position Overview

We are a leading environmental sensor design and manufacturing company serving various sectors, including Naval Defence, Maritime, and Marine Science & Technology. We seek an experienced Principal Electronics Engineer to design and develop electronics for instrumentation and acoustics applications.

Team Leadership

The Principal Electronics Engineer will support the Director of Engineering in coordinating Electronics Engineering projects and tasks. This role involves guiding and mentoring the engineering team to ensure timely project completion within budgets. The engineer will participate in risk assessments, technical audits, and design reviews, providing recommendations and ensuring their implementation. Additionally, the engineer will develop technical standards and offer support to Sales and Manufacturing departments.

Essential Skills

The ideal candidate will have expertise in analogue and digital circuit design, preferably in an instrumentation development environment. They should have experience with mixed signal design, including pre-amplifiers, filters, power supplies, interfacing, and analogue-digital conversion for precision instrumentation applications. Knowledge of microcontroller-based circuit design and embedded software is essential. The ability to work independently or as part of a team, contributing to all aspects of the product development cycle, is crucial. The candidate should also be able to produce design documentation and test specifications and be familiar with OrCAD design software or similar tools. IPC training can be provided if necessary.

Desired Skills

The candidate should have knowledge of basic analog components and circuits, operational amplifier circuits, power supply technology, circuit analysis, modeling, and theory, analog-digital conversion, interfacing and IO (e.g., I2C and SPI bus), CAD schematic layout and PCB design, fault finding, assembler and/or embedded 'C', use of PAL/FPGA technologies, and Linux and other operating systems.

Personal Characteristics

The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated with energy, pace, and enthusiasm. They should be an effective team player with strong attention to detail and time management skills. Strong written and presentational communication skills are essential, along with excellent communication abilities at all levels within and outside the company.

Other Requirements

This role occasionally requires working outside normal hours and traveling to customer sites. The candidate should be prepared to provide occasional offshore support, including some overseas travel.

Qualifications

A BSc/BEng or equivalent in Engineering or a similar discipline (2:1 or higher) is required.

Security Clearance

The role requires a UK passport holder (not dual) capable of gaining National Security Vetting - SC clearance, with 5 years of UK residency required.
